In this day and age when media is constantly bombarding unrealistic paradigms for beauty, it is important that kids and teens are taught that being beautiful is more than just skin deep.

In partnership with SouthSpot cable channel, the SPOTLIGHT PERSONALITY EMPOWERMENT WORKSHOP aims to help young people build their confidence by encouraging them to embrace their body shapes and sizes, by opening their hearts and minds to the world around them, by coaching them how to speak well and think creatively, and by nurturing their talents to bring out the finest traits of their “real” personalities. It’s all about polishing diamonds in the rough!

Founded by former MTV Producer/Director, Jill Palarca, the workshop is a 4-Week intensive course on TV Hosting, Emceeing for Live Events, Radio DJ-ing, Basic Acting, Dressing up according to their personality, shape, and size, Skin and Body Care, Basic Hair & Make-up Styling, and Print/Ramp Modelling.

Open to all girls and boys aged 8-19, the workshop will be conducted at the SouthSpot studios. Each session is 4 hours long that is comprised of hands-on activities, lectures, and demos. There will be 2 classes per day to accommodate the different age groups. Batch 1 classes will start on April 10, 2012.

Tuition fee is Php 7,000 for 20 days which is inclusive of snacks, materials, handouts, and copies of all their recordings and photographs. Students will receive a printed portfolio of their fashion photo shoots. They will perform on stage for a fashion and talent showcase. They will also act in a music video, and star in their own TV show to be produced by SouthSpot. There’s definitely no other workshop in town that offers the same experience and value for money.

Enrolment for the SPOTLIGHT Personality Empowerment Workshop Year 2 is now going on. Register at SouthSpot Studios, 59-B Aala Bldg., F. Iñigo St., (formerly Anda), Davao City. Look for Lucille Saniel. Or call/text 0922-8384981 for details. This workshop is supported by NCCC Mall, The Edge Radio, Le Souq and Popshionista.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8260774226173705800.post-22742719078385929502012-02-20T11:59:00.000+08:002012-02-20T18:21:41.773+08:00Begin with a Box... Before Thinking Out of the Box!
Here's the complete transcript of the speech I gave this morning in school.
***********************************************************
To our Dean, Dr. Adorico Aya-ay, faculty, and students of the Liberal Arts program of the University of the Immaculate Conception, a marvelous Monday to all of you.

When I was invited to speak today for the Opening Ceremonies of your Liberal Arts week, the first thing I asked about was the theme. Well actually, that was the second thing I asked. My first question was, “Can’t you invite anybody else of a “more significant stature in society" who can do the speech?” Well obviously they couldn’t because I’m here. So you’re kinda stuck with me. But I’ll try my best to make this worthwhile.

So who am I really? Who’s this pint-sized professor walking the halls of UIC Annex? How can a new part-time teacher, who can even barely spend some time in the faculty room, be credible enough to speak about INNOVATION?

Yes that is the theme of this year’s Liberal Arts week program. Actually, the complete title is “Innovative Thinking with Dynamic Understanding: A Sublime Pathway to Liberal Giving.” Wow, that is a mouthful!

Maybe it’s being new to all of these scholastic terminologies but honestly the theme sounds overwhelming. When I asked the organizer what it means, I got what I suspected she would answer “I’m not really sure, Ma’am,” she said.

And maybe that’s the usual problem in the university. We become so engrossed with the profound and fail to make it practical.

We encounter the words INNOVATION, and INNOVATIVE, and even INNOVATE being loosely used countless times. In the academe... in business marketing... in advertising... But what do they really mean?

Innovation, by lexical definition, means “a new idea”. In business, INNOVATION is the process by which an idea or invention is translated into a good or service for which people will pay, or something that results from this process, while the word “innovative” means “being ahead of its time”.

In information technology, recent examples of INNOVATORS would be Steve Jobs and his iPhone and iPad, and Mark Zuckerberg’s FaceBook – both changing the way how we communicate. In music, we have Lady Gaga, who continuously pushes the envelope with her ever changing looks, and tweeting each of her minute-by-minute evolution to her 20 million Twitter fans.

These are the gods and geniuses of this generation. This fast paced world follows them because they are constantly developing something new, fresh, trailblazing, daring, and creative. They are considered INNOVATIVE.

Unfortunately we cannot invite Mark Zuckerberg or Lady Gaga, and definitely Steve Jobs is out of the question, to speak here today about INNOVATION and about being INNOVATIVE. You just have ME. So maybe you’re asking “What does she know about Innovation?”

I admit. I am not an inventor. I am merely a smudge of being an iconoclast. But I can say that the path that has led me to this stage today is by itself an innovation. Let me tell you why.

If being innovative means thinking out of the box then let me tell you first about the 4 sides that make up that box. We have to remember that before we can make an abstract drawing of a cat, you must know first of all, how to draw a simple cat. Right?

So visualize a 4 sided-box. Each of these sides represents one factor that completes an INNOVATION. Conveniently, they also all begin with the letter “I”.

Again, if innovative thinking means thinking out of the box then we must have the box first. So here we go...

The first side to that box is IMAGINATION.

When I was a kid, I would put a blanket over my back and then just like that I became Super Girl. On other days though, I would put on tennis wrist bands and just like that I became Wonder Woman. And then during Halloween, I’d just get the broom from the kitchen and just like that I became a witch.

As a kid, I wasn’t really conscious that I was just pretending. It wasn’t just simply child’s play. My seven year old self actually believed that if I can IMAGINE it then it’s real.

And I think we were all that kind of kid once but somehow things changed as we grew older.

When we fail an exam, we think the path towards our dream career has just reached a dead end. When we fall in love and get broken hearted, we think we will never ever walk that aisle to the altar anymore. And when we get burned out at work, we think there’s already no way for us to shift gears in the middle of the road.

Believe it or not, I’ve had my share of flunking grades (Mostly in Math). I’ve had my own string of bad boyfriends (Mostly non-committal rock stars). And I have also lost some glamorous jobs.

But what kept me going is my child-like imagination. The dictionary has three very different meanings for the word “imagine”. One is to form an image of something in the mind; the second is to see or hear something unreal; and the third is to assume something.

To imagine then is basically like DREAMING. Despite how far-fetched the idea may have seemed, I was a teenager living here in Davao City back when we only had Victoria Plaza as the mall, and yet I imagined myself working for MTV. I imagined myself interviewing my favourite stars. I imagined myself travelling to Hollywood to watch concerts. And guess what? They did happen!

Great inventions ever made and the greatest stories ever written are all fruits of some people’s imagination. The technology that makes our lives comfortable today; the movies that entertain us during the weekends – they all started out as dreams that eventually became innovations.

But how can we turn figments of our imagination into innovations?

That leads us to the second side of the box which is INFORMATION.

About a week ago, the Grammy Awards were held in the U.S. and Paul McCartney was given a tribute at the tail end of the show. What should have been an awe-inspiring moment became an outrageous trending topic on the Internet. Millennials (that’s your generation) were asking “Who is Paul McCartney?”

WHO IS PAUL MCCARTNEY? Anybody who asks that question yet claims that they love Bruno Mars or Rico Blanco or Spongecola is clearly naive and clueless. Sadly, that’s the rising problem that we have now in this generation. It is quite ironic that despite the free-flow of information in the internet, kids today hardly know anything.

There is a reason why everyone is not a prodigy. There is a reason why despite our innate talents and vivid imagination we have to go to school.

Why are we enrolled in the Liberal Arts program in the first place? Ideally because we are supposed to get our sublime education from the university. This is where we learn about the classics... the masters! This is where we learn about theories and philosophies. That is why it’s called Higher Learning. I got my Creative Writing degree from the University of the Philippines, in Diliman. And that is where I learned about the great artists – writers and filmmakers all throughout history.

True, you don’t need a college degree to get a full grasp of who Paul McCartney is. But the point is if you don’t even know anything about pop culture how would you even care about Shakespeare? Would you even give Jose Rizal the time of day?

These brilliant minds wrote masterpieces that became the canon for good literature but they were only able to create their art because they read the works of writers before them – the same way that your current music idols also listened to Paul McCartney and the Beatles.

Lady Gaga followed in Madonna’s footsteps, and Madonna adulated over Marilyn Monroe, while Marilyn grew up watching Jean Harlow, and so on and so forth. The point here is there’s always someone who came ahead of someone.

Shakespeare and Rizal weren’t just naturally talented and imaginative geniuses. They say that art imitates life, but I believe in Oscar Wilde when he said that artists must not simply copy life but rather must make better or more meaningful versions of life through their art.

Good artists are INFORMED of the world through their keen observations but a Great artist is one who can INNOVATE through INFORMATION and IMAGINATION.

Art therefore is an INNOVATION of Life!

But what happens after school? What happens after we graduate with a degree in Communication Arts? Or English? Are Psychology Majors only pre-destined for careers in Human Resource?

This is where the 3rd side of the box comes in – Innovation needs IMMERSION!

When I enrolled in the Creative Writing program, the career options seemed limited at that time. I thought I could either use this as a pre-Law course or become a Fiction writer. This was during the ‘90s when Philippine publication was at its bleakest state. So there goes my wishful thinking.

I honestly didn’t know what kind of job I would be getting if I didn’t pursue Law School, so good thing that I was naturally a curious cat and IMMERSED myself in all sorts of hobbies and fields of interests. I guess this goes naturally with my interest in literature and the arts.

I was into rock music and watched every gig of the Eraserheads at every club in Quezon City. I was also into movies and found myself munching popcorn over blockbusters, art films, and foreign flicks at the UP Film Center. I was into Hollywood and Fashion so I’d pore over magazines just to feed my eyes with eye candy. I was into Super Heroes so I read a lot of comic books and became interested in graphic novels. I loved dancing so I took some Ballroom and HipHop dancing lessons.

I was into art and photography so I visited museums and dabbled in black and white photography at some point too. I love drama so I watched plays and knew all the chorus lines to famous Broadway Musicals. I tickled my palate through gastronomic adventures. I frequented book shops and lived vicariously through someone’s exquisite perspective of the world.

I remember one time in class when I was giving a lecture on how to write Food Reviews, I asked my students if they have already tasted Creme Brulee. And as if it was like something they didn’t deserve, my students remarked that pang kwek-kwek lang daw sila.

I was aghast by their defeatist perception of themselves. First of all Creme Brulee is just a fancy version of the Leche Flan. It’s not strictly for royalty. Anyone who has good taste or at least an interest on what’s delicious must try some in their lifetime!

Immersion then is all about having a big appetite for life!

So it would seem that IMMERSING in all of these whimsical pursuits made me a Jack or rather Jill-of-all-trades-master-of-none but the penchant to know it all certainly paid off when I applied in MTV as a segment producer.

Clearly, I had no formal training in TV production because I was not even a MassComm Graduate. I studied Literature! But my would-be-boss said that a diploma is not enough. Instead, they were looking for someone whose brain is a chock-full of ideas!

And where did I get my ideas anyway?

Well, I have always had a wild Imagination when I was a kid. I am armed with Information about pop culture and the arts. And I’ve had Immersion in all sorts of hobbies and interests. So even if I wasn’t technically prepared for the job – I had that innovative edge.

Why are ideas more important than technical skills? Simply because the audience is evolving. People’s tastes change. Trends come and go. TV like any other entertainment medium is all about innovating ideas.

And so finally, we must not forget that the last side to that box is INSPIRATION.

It’s not just about being inspired by great artists who came before us but we must also become inspirations of the next generation. When we think of ideas; when we create, we must take into consideration the impact it’s going to make in the years to come. How will the next wave benefit from our ideas?

We study the past to understand the present. In my personal journey, it took some wrong answers for me to get to the right one. I had the break-ups that led to my breakdowns that ultimately led to my breakthrough.

After a 15-year roller coaster life that took me to Manila, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, and New York, I have come full circle in this chapter of my life now that I am back in Davao City.

Coming home to give back to the community; to the school that has shaped me in my early teens is what I consider my biggest achievement so far.

I say “so far” because as renowned American journalist Lincoln Steffens once said, “Nothing is done. Everything in the world remains to be done or done over. The greatest picture is not yet painted, the greatest play isn’t written, the greatest poem is unsung. There isn’t in all the physical world a perfect railroad, nor a good government, nor a sound law. Physics, mathematics, and especially the most advanced and exact of the sciences are being fundamentally revised. . . Psychology, economics, and sociology are awaiting a Darwin, whose work in turn is awaiting an Einstein.”

And that is what we call INNOVATION! As I shifted from showbiz to school; from entertainer to educator, I have made an innovation of myself.

But this is not the end. Anytime now, the iPad 3 will be out soon and this little baby I’m holding will be passé. On the same note, I can’t wait to have a better version of me as soon as I finish my Master’s Degree (which I promised the Dean to start soon, by the way).

This week, all of you will be showcasing your different talents and skills. We’ll never know which among these interests of yours will pay off and eventually become a lucrative career in the future. But that’s actually the best thing about being in the Liberal Arts program – we can be anything, we can go anywhere, we can do lots of things!

It’s all about innovation!

Just remember that “Innovative thinking is thinking out of the box!” But how can you think out of the box when there’s no box to begin with?

So begin with your Imagination. Fuel up with Information. Propel your wings with Immersion. And fly high with Inspiration. Leave this school and one day come back with Innovations of yourselves.

Thank you and I wish you all the awesomeness in your Liberal Arts Week!

When we moved into our present home exactly one year ago, it became clear to my husband and me that we were definitely not in Metro Manila any more. Our quaint little house is tucked away in the forested hills of Catalunan Grande, a 30-minute ride away from downtown Davao. There were only four houses on our street. In the morning, the place looks more like some eerie deserted subdivision but in the evening, the symphony of crickets, fruit bats, and lizards, the disco-dancing of fireflies, our own version of Van Gogh’s starry night, and the cool mountain breeze will tell you otherwise. Indeed life is here in Davao!

But one particular “life” that caught our attention was this native dog that has taken residency in our street. She looked like any typical stray – thin and covered with mange, thus prompting us to give her the nickname Gally, derived from galis.

Gally was the neighbourhood’s dog. Other strays would grace our street but Gally was the only fixture. When it rained, she would seek shelter in an abandoned half-constructed house just a roof away from ours. She had these eyes that looked perpetually sad yet sweet. I guess that helped her way into all of our hearts. During the day, our three neighbours would feed her by dumping some leftovers on the ground right outside their gates and driveways. My husband and I however took a step further by making sure that she eats from a dog bowl every night, with some fresh water to drink. She would drink for a straight 5 minutes – proof that it was her only liquid intake for the day. And to cure her skin disease, my husband, who is a veterinarian, would regularly sneak some medicine into her food.

For the first few months, Gally would eat from her bowl outside our gate. Though she was really docile, Gally like any other stray dog naturally has some trust issues so it took us some considerable time before we finally got her to come inside our carport to eat. We preferred to feed her inside because there were many times before when she got bullied by the larger stray dogs who would visit the street. We believe that Gally used to have a home and probably was abandoned. She isn’t like the usual strays that are belligerent and fearful. She wouldn’t gobble up her food like any starving animal. She would eat daintily, looking up bashfully once in a while, as if asking with her eyes, “Is it okay to finish all these grub?”

Finally, we saw the positive results of the medication that we’ve been giving her. Her mange was now gone, except for a few scabs. And her coat was now thicker and brighter. But the best development was that Gringa, our own little diva dog, has finally become friends with her Ate Gally. Whenever my husband would take Gringa out for her routine evening walk, Gally would literally tail them. They have become a pack!

Although Gally still refused to let us pet her, we were thrilled enough to see her gallop towards us whenever our car would arrive at night. It was like coming home to a grand welcome; like a parent being greeted with warm hugs by the kids. This dog has certainly translated our presence into something positive. Every night while my husband fed her in our carport, I would hear my husband talk to her; coaxing her to come near so that he could further check her up. Gally took baby steps toward him as the months passed by.

Ever since Gally showed such enthusiasm and openness, my husband and I started to toy with the idea of adopting her. But seeing that our neighbours have also grown a fondness for the adorable stray, we thought that it would be quite unfair for Gally, and probably even traumatic, if we keep her inside the house the whole day while my husband and I are at work. We knew that her life is practically in danger if she continues to live on the street, but for the meantime we had to settle with doting on her during evenings and weekends. As long as we were assured that she was fed during the day then we saw no immediate need to take her in officially. And besides, she’s been living on this street unharmed for quite some time already. If our street had been in the middle of the city then we would have taken a more aggressive stride towards rescuing her. But Gally was relatively happy and content house-hopping among us neighbours – all four of us. Neverthless, we still looked forward for the right time. My husband and I were hopeful that a perfect prompt to adopt her would happen soon.

But yesterday morning as my husband and I walked towards our car to get to work, the sky was gray and giving off a drizzle. As if the weather wasn’t forlorn enough, our hearts sank at an unbelievable sight. Gally was lying on her side in the middle of the road – lifeless. I wailed the moment I realized that it wasn’t a bad dream. I was awake. But Gally was now in an endless sleep.

My husband’s frown slowly turned into a face of weeping little boy as he bent towards her. At this point, our other neighbour had already stepped out with a large sack to carry Gally’s dead body. He told us that she was hit by a car last night. Our neighbour also wore a miserable face as he gingerly placed Gally’s body inside the sack. “Ilubong nako ni didto banda.” He said he’ll bury the body as he pointed to a piece of land near his backyard. We nodded and thanked him for his thoughtfulness.

The ride to the office felt like a slow funeral procession as heavy traffic jammed the highway. Why do drivers move slow in the rain? To avoid accidents? Or is it simply to avoid dents on their cars? And yet last night during the rain one stupid, heartless maniac of a driver just didn’t mind putting a fatal dent on a living creature’s body.

My husband and I were silent during the ride. I knew we were thinking of the same thing but we were too guilty and heartbroken to verbalize it – we should have had taken her in earlier than we had planned. But it’s too late now. Gally won’t be greeting us tonight anymore. No more of those sweet sad eyes looking at us. I may not have a photo of her but her image is tattooed on my mind.

We will forever remember our darling Gally. She has definitely inspired us to become more conscientious about strays, especially those roaming in our area. But my husband and I can’t save all the Gallys in our midst. We hope though that more Davaoeños will grow a bigger heart and open their homes for the other Gallys out there. At the same time, we pray that more people will have the compassion for the Aspins (Asong Pinoy or native dog) and refrain from being breed-conscious. The say it takes a village to raise a child. But for us and our neighbors, it only took a street with only four houses to make a stray dog feel at home.

Baba’s Asong-Pinoy Rescue Ko, Robinsons Cybergate Davao, and MyPetChannel.tv present “MUTTINI: A Christmas Cocktail Party to help rescue dogs in Davao City” This will be a charity event for the benefit of B.A.R.K (Baba’s Asong-Pinoy Rescue Ko), an NGO working to rescue dogs, particularly Aspins, from the Davao dog pound’s death row and rehabilitate them for adoption.

MyPetChannel.tv is spearheading the fundraiser to help the organization’s increasing needs as more dogs are being rescued and fostered by volunteers. The event wishes to introduce the Animal Welfare program to the city of Davao, particularly the pet lovers and concerned citizens who believe in the pursuit of a humane society.

The party will also be a splendid meet-up for people who wish to mingle with fellow pet owners. The registration fee is at 200 pesos and entitles the participant to drinks served by Tata Benito’s Cafe and FizzBee Cocktails, and a Christmas loot bag filled with treats and gifts, and special prizes for pets in costume courtesy of our sponsors Bow Wow dog food by Handyman and My Furry Baby. But most of all, the proceeds of the event will benefit B.A.R.K so pet lovers get to help while having fun!

During the event, you can avail of the free veterinary consultation for your pets while B.A.R.K will talk about responsible pet ownership and the pet adoption process.

It’s time to make Davao City a safe place for our pets. We are sincerely asking your help to support this cause. Make this a merry Christmas for abandoned Aspins.
Wow I just realized that my last post was almost half a year ago already. I was so busy and I have this website to blame: www.mypetchannel.tv

Whoever said that having your own business means you can now have control of your time obviously doesn't know what they're talking about. Anyway, in short work has kept me from my blog so here's a quick update on what happened for the past 6 months since my last post.
April -- This was TAILRUNNERS month! It was a success -- we had 300+ dogs in the first ever dog marathon in the country. Click HERE for more action photos! So that really knocked us down. My husband and I were so tired from that event so we took a vacation and went down to Bohol and Davao.

May -- During our break, I fell in love! So we had to bring home this little sweetheart. Her name is Gringa Girl. She's a mixed-breed -- a mix of terrier, chihuahua, spitz, cat, human, (hehe)... for easier reference, we proudly tell people she's an Aspin! We adopted her from Bohol. And now she's our pampered princess!

June -- We agreed to be an online media sponsor of this pet event but almost didn't because we learned that they were "raffling out toy dogs!" We were like WTF?! Pets are not prizes! So we advised the organizer not to push through with it (raffle) especially since they were supposed to be supporting CARA Welfare (Compassion and Responsibility for Animals). Being new to the whole pet event industry, the organizers needed some education on animal welfare. We communicated to them our concerns and everything was settled. We really hope that none of these circumstances will ever happen again... even if SPONSORS insist!
Here's the BIG NEWS... We are moving to Davao City for good! We're very excited. We know it's going to be good for business (the pet event market suddenly became saturated in Manila) and most of all good for my family. We can't wait to bring Gringa out often to play and run... on the beach... on parks... We can't wait for the good (and cheap) food... the fruits... the fresh air... the opportunities are endless! We thank God for opening this door for us. I definitely have a lot to blog about in the next few weeks so watch out. :-)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8260774226173705800.post-76057741963695572542010-03-22T01:53:00.001+08:002010-03-22T01:57:38.583+08:00Run to Raise Funds for Shelter Dogs in Metro Manila
Help the shelter dogs by joining TailRunners: The Metro Dog Run 2010. A percentage of your registration fee fee goes to PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society), CARA (Compassion and Responsibility for Animals), AKF (Animal Kingdom Foundation), and the Cavite Animal Welfare Society. The more people joining the run, the more money we can donate.

One of our TailRunning Ambassadors is Trumpets Playshop Creative Director Audie Gemora. He is a proud member of the PAWS Aspin Club which is set to be launched in April, just in time for TailRunners 2010. Skipper here is Audie's adopted Asong Pinoy (native breed).

If you still call native dogs Askals (short for Asong Kalye), then you must have been living under a rock all this time. After the very successful “See Beauty Beyond Breed” – a national print ad campaign featuring celebrities Heart Evangelista and Jericho Rosales; preceded by trailblazing events such as the “Pinakamagandang Hayop sa Balat ng Lupa” – a native dog beauty pageant, which was judged by Ms. Universe 1969 herself, Gloria Diaz (who also happens to be the star in the cult classic film of the same title), our very own local breed is now known in politically correct terms as the ASPIN or the Asong Pinoy. And it was only a matter of time until an official Aspin Club would finally emerge.

The PAWS Aspin Club’s SEC registration papers state that the club “aims to improve how Filipinos view & treat native and mixed-breed dogs by celebrating the unique characteristics of each dog and helping people make the right choice – the choice to adopt Aspins from shelters, pounds, or rescued off the streets.” The PAWS Aspin Club was established to help unite native dog owners to incite change, and help these extraordinary dogs receive the recognition and care they deserve.”

“TailRunners: The Metro Dog Run 2010” on April 17, 6AM at the SM Mall of Asia grounds is set to be the biggest doggie marathon ever to happen in Metro Manila. It is presented by MyPetChannel (www.mypetchannel.tv), the online guide to a happy pet lifestyle in the Philippines, Royal Canin dog food, and Pet Express, the one-stop shop for all your dogs’ and cats’ needs.

This Run for a Cause intends to unite all pet lovers, breed clubs, animal welfare groups, local government offices, and private businesses, to push for more pet friendly places in the metro, and to work for a more humane treatment of rescued and shelter animals in every municipality. No to dog pounds! Yes to animal shelters! If other cities can do it, why can’t the rest follow? A percentage of the registration fee goes to the four beneficiary Animal Welfare Groups: Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (CARA), Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF), and the Cavite Animal Welfare Society (SAWS Cavite).

With the pet industry boom in the country and the rising awareness of responsible pet ownership among Filipinos, more establishments – from restaurants to condominiums, and many other places – are now opening their doors to the furry companions of their customers. The SM Mall of Asia is one of the few malls in the metro that has proclaimed to be pet friendly!

“TailRunners” also aims to promote the importance of FITNESS for humans and canines alike. We already know the therapeutic effect that pets have on their owners that help ease the stress of the urban jungle. But best of all, RUNNING WITH YOUR DOG has been proven to be a great way to keep fit because it combines all the benefits of exercise for both man and dog, and quality time with our most loyal best friend.

Joining the run as “TailRunning Ambassadors” are Sports Anchor & Frisbee femme fatele Reema Chanco with her Golden Retriever Sasha, Commercial Model and Radio Jock Hilary Isaac with her Siberian Husky Rufus, and Theater Actor/Director Audie Gemora with his adopted Asong Pinoy (Aspin) Skipper, as well as Mondioring Trainer Carl de Leon with his American Bulldog Kovu, and Pet Express Marketign Manager & Running Enthusiast Janine Ngo with her Dachshund Impulse. These perfectly paired Running Buddies are definitely good examples that there’s nothing more fun and fulfilling than keeping fit with your dogs. Watch their viral videos on http://www.mypetchannel.tv/tailrunners.

The run is open to all breeds and dog sizes as long the dog is over 1 year old, in good health, and has received proper vaccination. The distances available are 1.5 km, 3km, and 5km. Aside from the actual dog run, there will also be side activities such as fun games and canine sport exhibitions. All registered participants will get fully loaded doggy bags of treats and race essentials. Exciting prizes and special awards await the winners!

Registration fee starts at Php350. To register and to know more about other fees, run schedule, and other details, log on to http://tailrunners.mypetchannel.tv
Just when I was beginning to drift into sleep, my husband woke me up.Waaah...

Joseph and I are used to having busy Sundays, considering all our activities in our church, but this particular Sunday was definitely going to be a longer one. The schedule: Pick up my mother-in-law and bring her to the airport for her 4AM flight to Tagbilaran, then at 5AM, meet up with videographer Dan Pamintuan and his crew at San Miguel by the Bay (SM MOA), then at 6AM expect the arrival of Janine Ngo, Marketing Manager of Pet Express and her Dachshund Impulse, and Reema Chanco and her Golden Retriever Sasha. The agenda: To shoot the first batch of viral videos for our first big event for 2010 -- "TAILRUNNERS: THE METRO DOG RUN 2010!"

I'm not a morning person but I ain't complaining because our pet project's finally wagging its tail!

The moment we confirmed Royal Canin as one of our co-presenters for the event, my fingers got busy contacting celebrities who would make great Ambassadors for the project. Nobody else comes to mind who would be best to promote Canine Cross Training but Reema Chanco. I've known Reema since her MTV VJ Hunt days backn 2003 and I could even remember Sasha back then. She used to bring him a lot during the competition challenges.

To be honest I was rooting for Reema back then. She had that thing in her that was just more sincere than the others. I just knew that she had that "MTV factor" in her. But well I wasn't one of the judges so I don't really know what happened. At least they still made a good choice with Patty Laurel. She was my 2nd pick actually. :-)

But it all turned a full circle when years later Reema finally became an MTV VJ. Unfortunately I wasn't with MTV anymore at that time so I didn't have the privilege of directing her. That Sunday was actually going to be sort of my first time to do so.

I e-mailed her about the Dog Run event, she was excited. I was equally thrilled. Since her schedule's going to be packed in the coming week, we immediately booked a shooting date for the viral video campaign. This was a Friday. Janine from SM Pet Express didn't have enough time to get a permit from Mall of Asia so we did what we had to do -- shoot guerilla style! It was more fun that way actually.

We shot the video on HD wide screen aspect and it came out splendid. We can't wait to upload the other viral videos featuring other celebs. Who are they? Now that's something you'll have to find out very soon. In the meantime, check out this teaser vid featuring Reema Chanco and Sasha.
Or should we say BARKING? The fact that we already have dog hotels and pet sitters, malls that compete for the “pet friendly” title, pets celebrating grander Halloween parties than humans, and boutique superstores with shelves and shelves of pet food, vitamins, shampoo, accessories and toys is proof enough. Be it a stall in Tiendesitas or a Multiply online seller, even the small and medium petrepreneurs are gaining some pace in the game.

This pet ownership paradigm shift inspired the birth of MyPetChannel in October 2009. I still remember that fateful day in UP Diliman. I was just strolling around the campus, concerned about my future "career" (or the impending doom) when I saw this ad: Channel [V] Phil was looking for a PR Writer. So I immediately submitted my resume and went in for an interview I think all on the same day. It was just one of those things when despite the fact that the odds were against me (being a newbie and all, vying for a much coveted job) I knew that it was going to be my destiny. The same way I felt when I applied for that very competitive exchange program SSEAYP.

I remember Peachy Almario, my soon-to-be new boss at that time, telling me "There were other more experienced writers applying for this job but I like you the best because you've got the biggest personality among all of them!"

Until this day I'm really thankful to her for giving me that ONE break that I have been waiting to happen... for seeing the potential in me. After graduating from college, I really didn't know what to do with my Creative Writing Degree. The publishing industry back then was just starting to bloom. I remember submitting a resume to Summit Media's office at the old Sogo Warehouse at the corner of Pioneer and EDSA, right where Robinsons Pioneer (The Forum) is standing on now. My passion for television started with Channel [V] Philippines.

It was a big privilege to be part of the pioneering team that launched the music channel in the Philippines. As PR Associate/Writer, I directly assisted the Press Relations Director (Peachy) in the timely accomplishment of all Press and Publicity related requirements from preparing press kits, writing press releases and website content, coordinating with all media offices, to providing press material for Marketing ad Production departments. I also learned how to prepare the PR plan and to implement the required tasks within set budgets and schedules. I also got trained in client servicing at optimum level and was exposed to a highly demanding, socially-oriented industry where ensuring strong ties with the Media is the ultimate priority.

I learned all that in just a year. But more importantly I also saw how the Production Department churned out cutting edge videos and on-air plugs for the channel as you can see on the video below. That was when I knew that I should not limit myself to writing. I must learn how to be a Producer. Since I was not a Masscomm student, I barely had any idea on the technical aspects of video production but one thing's for sure -- my head was exploding with ideas. As someone who practically grew up in front of the television and is a certified pop junkie, I knew the pulse of the youth.

So it didn't take long before I got another break (to be a Producer this time) from Channel [V]'s rival MTV... Now that's another blog entry altogether.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8260774226173705800.post-34556571246429073972010-02-10T18:49:00.005+08:002010-02-10T19:06:34.153+08:00Winning Music AwardsI had a blast managing The Late Isabel from 2004-2005, not only because they were unique but also because I was blessed to experience being nominated and winning awards with the band:

“My Favorite Things” music video (March 2005)

NOMINEE
>BEST INDIE VIDEO at the 2005 MTV PILIPINAS AWARDS

“Doll’s Head” music video (March 2004)

WINNER
>BEST INDIE VIDEO @ 2004 MTV PILIPINAS AWARDS

NOMINEE
>MOST STYLISH VIDEO @ 2004 MTV STYLE AWARDS

WINNER
>IN THE RAW AWARD @ 2004 NU 107 ROCK AWARDS

NOMINEE
>BEST MUSIC VIDEO @ 2004 NU 107 ROCK AWARDS

The Late Isabel @ the 2004 MTV Pilipinas Awards

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8260774226173705800.post-76558052442151888552010-02-10T18:24:00.012+08:002010-02-10T18:49:15.498+08:00Music and FashionOne of the things I really enjoyed during my stint as manager/agent for rock band The Late Isabel was the FASHION. The vocalist Wawi is definitely one of the the band's strongest asset. Her art goes beyond the songs of Isabel. Her fashion sense, and the band's image in general, is in itself a performance. They were, and probably still are, one of the most fashionable local bands in the country. That is why during my time with them I had the privilege of creating fashion campaigns for them:

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; But well... at least we tried with this band and it was quite an experience...

I've been good friends with THE LATE ISABEL folk even before I became their "ad hoc" manager/agent back in 2004. I've been watching their gigs until one day I suddenly found myself doing marketing for the re-issue and major distribution of their first studio album "Doll's Head" and the production of their 2nd music video "My Favorite Things" -- the nightmare version of the Julie Andrews/Sound of Music classic.

The first challenge was to find sponsors to reproduce the album and a music label to distribute the CDs. This was way before "emo" and "Twilight", mind you. Peddling the idea of fashionable vampires was still unpopular. Been there done that, indeed.

Thanks to some maverick sponsors (and good friends) The Store With No Name, 6 Underground, GBX Shoes, and would you believe even the old Greenbelt Shopping Plaza, I was able to pool enough resources to produce a new music video and the re-packaged first album "Doll's Head" which now contains not just songs but also the two music videos of the band -- "Doll's Head" and the new one "My Favorite Things"

Here's the video we produced on a shoestring budget but came out quite sophisticated.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
